by George Harris I am sure everyone is looking forward to fall. Shorter days, cooler temperatures, and it really is my favorite time of year here at the lake. With the onset of fall, the worry of all this 'algae scare' should go away for awhile, with cooler lake temperatures. So with Labor Day Weekend upon us, everyone is asking all of us everyday lake folks, about what we think on the Corp water warning. The Internet is such a great tool to learn about anything, including Blue Green Algae, and the current one, Cylindrospermopsis, I am not |

bashing the Corp here, in fact if the truth were known, I am sure the Corp is wondering how they became the keeper of what's 'in' the water. And it is surprising that the DEQ or the Health Dept is not involved with all of this. From my understanding, the testing that took place at Tenkiller, was done back in the coves, in areas that people do not swim in, and in shallow areas where boats can't even get into, stagnate areas. Also, by the time test results are completed, then rolled out to the public, days to weeks have passed, and from what I have read about any kind of algae, things can change rapidly, to better or worse conditions. So in my opinion, the warnings that we are hearing from the Corp, in theory, are already obsolete, and not current. The lake association is looking into the cost of these, so we can possibly give the lake visitor a more current observation, that is taken from a part of the lake that has heavier use, rather than up in a cove. In the past week, the Corp has been posting about Cylindrospermopsis, kinda the Loch Ness Monster of algaes. In reading about this one, it is very unique, in the sense that it travels beneath the surface of the water. Again, it was found up in the coves. So, if you are asking me? I swam last weekend in open water last Sat and Sun, with no ill effects. I hope that there is more study that takes place on all of this, because I can't find any studies talking about humans and algaes, only what happens when a farm animal laps it up when they are thirsty. So if you add, no lapping up of lake water to your cautions, you should be all right. Again, google is an awesome learning tool, have a look for yourself. I am sure, everyone is looking forward to fall. Click here for the Tulsa District Corp of Engineers Website
