Growth in the area has also meant growth in our schools. We are thrilled and excited that this will be Keys School district's second graduating Senior Class. As in many years before, Keys students only went through grade school and junior high and would have to continue their High School through Tahlequah. With this growth, Keys has developed an unbeaten Varsity Football Team, their second year in a row!!! Vian has always had a strong football tradition. This year Vian High School's football team is unbeaten in district play, setting the stage for a great football game Friday, November 4th, 7:30 PM, at the Keys Football Field. The winner will be the district champion and will host a fourth place team in the playoffs. The loser will also begin post season play at home but will face a third place team. |

The Vian / Keys game last year had to be the biggest crowd attendance in Vian, with folks beginning to tailgate as early as 4:00, and thousands attending. See you at Keys!

Tenkiller Lake is approximately eleven and a half feet BELOW the normal elevation of 632.00. Many of the ramps are unusable and closed. The ramps that are currently usable are: STRAYHORN DAY USE AREA, SNAKE CREEK PUBLIC USE AREA, CHICKEN CREEK SOUTH RAMP (One lane), STANDING ROCK, BLACKGUM LANDING, CATO, AND CARTERS LANDING PUBLIC USE AREA. Boaters are advised to launch at their own risk. Other areas may exist in the lake that may be exposed or nearer to the surface of the water such as shallow lake bottom, trees, stumps, and rocks. Beware of all potential hazards on the lake. Use extreme caution and use the lake safely and wisely. |

The road across the new spillway is still off limits to large and heavy vehicles. These vehicles continue to be detoured to other roads. While traffic is being diverted over the new spillway, a new bridge is being constructed where the old road was. After completion of the second bridge, then all traffic will be allowed to use the road. If all construction activities go according to plan and are on schedule, The approach channel can be completed in the dry at the lowered pool elevation. After that, the Phase II work will be complete and the auxiliary spillway will be fully operational. When the work is all completed, the calendar will probably be reading sometime in February 2006. The lake will be ready to catch the first late winter/early spring rains and in doing so will hopefully regain the lake's normal pool elevation before the next recreation season which will begin in April 2006. Written by Betty Curtis Located at the south junction of Highway 82 and 100 McQuicks Grocery is a Lake Tenkiller landmark. Almost everyone who knows about and visits Lake Tenkiller has at one time or another stopped at McQuicks. It has become the information central of the Blackgum area. Truck drivers and deliverymen all know if they |

need to know where someone lives or how to contact somebody they just need to go to McQuicks and ask. In the winter they are the road info center and lots of people on the mountain call at 6 am to check road conditions. The original store was started in 1981 by Kim and Kent Hutson. It was your everyday convenience lake store. It progressed into a small grocery store and meat market. As word got around about the hand cut steaks McQuicks got a reputation for the best steaks on the lake and in recent years for it's pizza and Sub sandwiches. Two years ago the store was purchased by LaDonna and Terry Skaggs. Terry is a lifelong resident of Blackgum. The store recently has gotten a facelift with new paint outside and new" pay at the pump" gas pumps. Now you can get gas 24 hrs a day with the pay at the pump option. When you are at the lake stop by and visit with the people at McQuicks. They still have the best steaks and just about anything else you would ever need whether you are a year round resident of the area or just here for the weekend

"Over the next few weeks, the area will offer a feast for the eyes and an excellent opportunity to visit the outdoors and get to know the workings of fall. The area's first fall colors are just now beginning to reveal themselves. Red is spreading over the sumac. It is tinting the poison ivy and starting to color the Virginia creeper. Hues of red can already be seen highlighting the dogwood leaves.Yellow is starting to show itself in the hackberry, sycamore and hickory leaves.Soon the black gum and the oaks will begin their brilliant color shifts." Contact your U.S. Senator and Congress member about the Dirty Water Lobby's effort to define poulty waste as non-hazardous. We are very concerned about a reported effort in the appropriations process to define poultry waste as non-hazardous when in fact it is a danger to water quality and safety. Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson is attempting to protect eastern Oklahoma streams and lakes from excess poultry waste. An important element of his lawsuit centers on this issue. Clean, safe water is critical to eastern Oklahoma. We know you believe this so please help protect the Illinois River and Lake Tenkiller. Excess poultry litter is seriously degrading these important water resources. STIR, Save the Illinois River, Inc. is dedicated to educating, engaging, and empowering Oklahomans to protect and preserve the Illinois River, its tributaries, and Lake Tenkiller. We support STIR and hope you do too, by writing your Senator and Congress member. |
