Fall Foliage at Peak?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Written by Diane Rutland, Sales and Marketing, Greenleaf and Tenkiller State Parks, "Two great places to park!"www.travelok.com 918-487-5622, extension 4
November is here, and I know you're thinking about the foliage.
Each day brings about more yellows and oranges in contrast to the green pine trees that are so prevalent in this area. Sumac gleams bright red and the yellow sassafras and orange poison ivy leaves make for an enjoyable sight. A drive through Greenleaf State Park or Tenkiller State Park will give guests a real treat to the trees that have begun to turn. Trees reflect a quilt of fall
colors as they embrace the hills around the lakes. The yellow leaves of the hickory trees and persimmon trees are easy to spot. The orange and red colors of the maple trees are just beginning. The winding leaves of the Virginia Creeper are adding vibrant red touches to the trees that are still holding on to their leaves. There is much more color to come and we expect the peak to still be at least a week away.
You can go to www.travelok.com and get the latest foliage reports. It's a good link to Foliage for lots of routes throughout the state. The site is updated as often as reports come in to them.
Did you know we feature special rates during the "fall" season? Cabins are discounted on weekdays (Sundays through Thursdays) at both parks. Stay one day or four. New Cherokee Hills Scenic Byway
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Written by John Lang Copyrighted Photo by Ron Day

At the latest Greater Tenkiller Area Association meeting on October 8th, Donna Tinnin, Tourism Development & Planning Specialist for the Cherokee Nation, gave a wonderful presentation on what has been newly designated the "Cherokee Hills Scenic Byway." Made possible through a joint partnership between the Cherokee Nation, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation and the University of Oklahoma, the 88- mile route runs from Highway 10 in Gore all the way to West Siloam Springs near the Arkansas border.

Travelers will be delighted with the beauty and the spectacular views this route provides of Lake Tenkiller and the Illinois River. I have long tried to convince my out-of-state friends that Eastern Oklahoma has scenery that rivals any to be found in Colorado, New England or the Pacific Northwest, and now we have the "scenic route designation" to back it up! This is only the second route to be designated a scenic byway in Oklahoma (the first being the Talimena Scenic Byway on Highway 1 south of Heavener) and the Cherokee Nation is also pursuing the Federal designation too.

Even better news: "Now communities along the byway will have the opportunity to apply for federal grant monies from the National Byways Program and will be eligible for partnerships with the University of Oklahoma," according to Richard Andrews, Oklahoma Byways Program Coordinator and ODOT Project Management Division Assistant Manager. Towns located along the byway include Gore, Cookson, Keys, Tahlequah and West Siloam Springs.

The Cherokee Nation will help to manage the byway and act as a liason between communities. The tribe will also work closely with ODOT and OU to diversify and broaden local economies by helping to implement increased tourism and marketing plans. Tenkiller Courtesy Docks Now Complete

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Written by Leann Bunn, Pictures by George Harris
Tenkiller State Park would like to announce the dedication of our long awaited Courtesy Docks, Saturday November 1st at 11 am. To dedicate these docks Oklahoma Tourism and
Recreation Department, Director Kris Marek will be delivering the dedication address. There also will be several legislators and representatives of our Tenkiller Park Partners group present for the festivities. We welcome anyone that would like to share with us the pride we have in being able to provide such a needed service to our guests and the community
These courtesy docks came about because of a survey the park initiated in 2000. Our guests and community members indicated that one of the major needs here at Tenkiller State Park was courtesy docks for the loading and unloading of guests. Tenkiller Park Partners examined the survey and decided that the courtesy docks would be a worthwhile project to support. Tenkiller Park Partners President Lou Grimes took the partners decision to Park Manager Steve Williams and asked if the partners could pursue this project and thus started raising money. Grant money was applied for and obtained through a Federal Program administered through the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. Along with our agency and legislative support totaling $31,000 of a $91,000 project, this project has now been realized.
Tenkiller State Park and Tenkiller Park Partner's dream of courtesy docks now continues with providing bumpers, special buoys and special lighting for the docks. This has been a long term project that has taken great efforts from a great many people and we all share in the pride of this dedication.
TenkillerProperty.com LLC, a leading real estate brokerage firm on Lake Tenkiller, located in Eastern Oklahoma, was recognized number 91 in Entrepreneur magazine's annual "HOT 100" listing of America's top fast-growth businesses and the entrepreneurs who built them. In its May 2008 issue, Entrepreneur compiled this list with the help of research provider CentrisPoint and its database of 21 million U.S. businesses. Of the nearly 21 million companies on the preliminary list, only 0.3% made the first cut, and just a fraction of those made it to the Hot 100, including TenkillerProperty.com
