systems. I'm proud to bring this funding to eastern Oklahoma to help assist with the overwhelming backlog of operational maintenance on our state's waterways. " Boren said. Tenkiller Lake will receive $3,522,000 and Webbers Falls Lock and Dam $4,358,000. The funding was part of the Energy and Water Appropriations portion of the Omnibus Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2009 which passed the House Wednesday by a vote of 245 to 178. According to the Corp website, NOTICE TO CAMPERS FOR THE 2009 RECREATION SEASON!!!!!!!! Due to extra funds that the lake may be receiving this year to repair campsites, all parks, except Strayhorn, may experience some type of closure either to certain sites, or perhaps the whole park. It is not certain when and where the campsite work may begin or how long it will affect certain parks. There may be some reservations that may need to be cancelled due to the work. Tenkiller Water Watchers Report ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

It is hard to believe that another season is almost gone. Signs of spring are starting to show up; daffodils and crocuses sprouting, elm trees in bloom and the days getting longer. The lake is in its winter mode, no thermocline and fairly uniform oxygen levels from surface to 130 feet. Water temperatures should start to increase over the next several weeks. The lake level has been fairly steady between about 2 feet below normal |
|
to, now, about 2 feet above normal. The Corps has dropped the lake level 6 or 8 inches in the last week. I'm guessing they will try to get it down to normal level before we get to our rainy season. Fishing has been slow from most reports I've heard, however the bass fishermen continue to be out every weekend, even on the coldest days. They must be catching something. John Ellis

Gerald Hilsher of Tulsa was reelected Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission Chairman Feb. 17. Steve Randal, who lives on Flint Creek, was reelected Vice |

Chairman. Randy Corp of Edmond was elected Secretary-Treasurer. STIR President Kurt Robinson addressed the Commission about the proposed new regional wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in northwest Arkansas. Robinson said STIR has urged the Northwest Arkansas Conservation Authority to design the new facility for removal of phosphorus at a level of less than 1 part per million (ppm). Oklahoma has told the U.S. EPA and the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality that the proposed limit of 1 ppm is not satisfactory and that technology exists to achieve a limit of point-1 ppm or less. U.S. EPA has advised planners that the regional WWTP will have to meet point-one ppm in 2012 in a move viewed by STIR as a compromise. Planners say it would cost an additional $5 million to meet the point-one ppm standard. In 2012, both Arkansas and Oklahoma must achieve the phosphorus standard established by Oklahoma for the Illinois River. That standard is point-037 ppm total phosphorus. Robinson commented on the "foot print" of the poultry industry in the Illinois River watershed. Several representatives of Arkansas poultry companies were present for the meeting in order to make a final payment on a $1.1 million gift to the OSRC. Robinson said the industry's foot print in much larger than the benefits of the gift. The gift, which was opposed by several OSRC members, "is not off setting," Robinson said. Mark Simmons, head of Simmons Foods of Siloam Springs, Arkansas, acknowledged the industry has an environmental foot print. "We work within the laws of both states and if the laws need modification, state agencies can propose changes. We would cooperate with those agencies," Simmons said.
