In Defense of the Illinois River and Tenkiller Lake" will be presented Wed., March 12 in Tahlequah by Save the Illinois River, STIR. |
Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson will discuss Oklahoma's clean water lawsuit naming out of state poultry companies for polluting the Illinois River watershed. The United States Federal Court suit against some of the nation's largest poultry corporations is expected to be heard in Tulsa in 2009. The program will begin at 2 P.M. at the Armory Municipal Center on Water Street. There is no charge for admission. STIR is a not-for-profit, all volunteer organization formed by Tahlequah citizens in the mid-1980s to protect the Illinois River, its tributaries, and Tenkiller Lake. STIR was instrumental in obtaining the U.S. Supreme Court ruling Oklahoma and other states now rely on to protect their streams that originate in other states. STIR members from throughout Oklahoma also rallied to create one of America's first rules to protect water from phosphorus pollution. For more information, call 918 456-3407 or see their web site

Feb 29, Friday Leap Day (Sadie Hawkins Day -kinda) A tradition was introduced many centuries ago to allow women to propose to men during a leap year. This privilege of proposing was restricted to leap day in some areas. Leap day was sometimes known as "Bachelors' Day". A man was expected to pay a penalty, such as a gown or money, if he refused a marriage offer from a woman. The tradition's origin stemmed from an old Irish tale referring to St Bridget striking a deal with St Patrick to allow women to propose to men every four years. This old custom was probably made to balance the traditional roles of men and women in a similar way to how the leap day balances the calendar. |

The water has been cold and clear in the lower end of the lake, and as is usual for this time of year -- there is no thermocline. Oxygen levels are pretty much uniform from top to bottom due to the continual movement of cooler (and heavier) surface water to the bottom of the lake. This process transports oxygen to the deepest portions of the lake. |
The rain over the weekend of February 16 and 17 has brought the lake up at least three feet and the back ends of most of the coves are a little muddy. This is a good time to try night crawlers on the bottom in the back ends of the cove, like Pine Cove for example. Channel cats will be in there feeding on anything edible that washes down the stream. Fishing is generally sloooowwww, except for crappie and bass around brushpiles and docks. Also, a few nice catfish are being caught on juglines, however finding shad for bait is tough. Frozen shad will work, though not near as well as fresh shad. If you go fishing, be very careful. Hypothermia will set in very quickly if you fall in the water. John Ellis Tenkiller Water Watchers

My friend Steve Williams, Park Manager of Tenkiller & Greenleaf State Parks sent us an update of what is going on, and I would say there are plenty of positive things to tell everyone about our State Parks. Thanks Steve and Staff for all you do! We had a prebid conference on our two new Courtesy Docks last week - bids close later this week - both bidders assured me that if water levels stayed within a few feet of normal, either of them would have the docks in place by Memorial Day weekend of 2008. New Docks will be located near both of our Boat Ramps in the park. We have just been informed that funding has been approved to construct new comfort stations at Hickory Flats and Fisherman Point Campgrounds, as well as new waterless toilets at the marina boat dock areas and Gooseneck Bend campgrounds |
Funding has also been approved to replace the furniture in the remainder of the Tenkiller cabins this year. Funding has been approved for renovation of the swimming pool at Tenkiller. |
