The fifth annual Vian Independence Day Fireworks Extravaganza sponsored by the Vian Community Charitable Trust will be held Monday evening, July 3rd at the Vian School Football Field. The 2006 fireworks show has been contracted to Pyrotechnics of Richland Missouri.

According to Shannon Smith of The Greater Tenkiller Area Association (GTAA), the association will again be sponsoring this year's 2006 fireworks display begining at dusk on Tuesday, July 4th on the South end of the lake at the Dam area. The annual event is funded by business owners and individuals. This years display should be one of the biggest and best ever for the Lake Tenkiller area.

I have been fortunate to attend both of the shows in the years past, and they both are unique. The lake show will be spectacular over the water, and is more of a higher overhead display shot over the lake with awesome reflections from the water. The Vian display is more contained, kind of an "up close and personal" experience with music, a constant barrage of energy. I would strongly suggest getting to your position early at both shows

The economic landscape of Oklahoma has rapidly changed and so has Lake Tenkiller's. The State (it seems overnight) has become #2 in the nation for casino population. We now have over 80 Indian Tribal Casinos and 3 Racinos, with Nevada holding the #1 spot with Commercial Casinos and Colorado coming in a distant 3rd. Driving the State, they are popping up everywhere. The statistics come from the America Gaming Association.

Sallisaw now has 2 with the Grand Opening of the Cherokee Casino Sallisaw featuring the "Back 40 Bar & Grill". Blue Ribbon Downs became a "Racino" a few months ago, and live horse racing will fire back up the last weekend in July.

Tahlequah also has 2 with the Keetoowah Cherokee Casino, that seems to challenge Wal-Mart (next door) for the highest number of cars in the parking lot, and Cherokee Casino Tahlequah operating in what looks to be a temporary building in front of a large unit under construction behind it.

Click here for the The Oklahoma Association for Gambling Addiction Awareness Website. I'll bet ya it won't be too long before it becomes the second largest organization of it's kind. I admit I have visited all of these at one time or another, and it is nice to see local folks you know working in them that were needing a job. I have not seen any in the area building theaters, and to my knowledge, there is only one with a golf course. Visting Vegas and Tunica those are two amenities that I enjoy, and hopefully that is in the gaming future for Oklahoma.

Sharing The Story of Tragedy, Can Save Lives

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
E-news, From the Tulsa District of The Army Corp of Engineers
The Memorial Day weekend holiday death toll on Oklahoma state lakes was the highest that safety officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers can recall. Four of the five deaths occurred on Corps lakes, and each could have been prevented. The tragedy of the loss is compounded when we learn that three of the four deaths were people doing simple things - wading and swimming. None of the victims wore a life vest.
Oologah Lake - 27 year old male died while swimming from the beach to a buoy line about 50 feet from shore. He was found in 14 feet of water not wearing a life jacket.
Eufaula Lake - 5 year old girl drowned while wading at the swim beach and was found in 4 1/2 feet of water. She could not swim and did not wear a life jacket.
Skiatook Lake - 31 year old man died from multiple injuries as he was swinging from the bluffs, hit the rocks and disappeared into 10 feet of water. Diving and jumping into lakes are prohibited. No life jacket was worn.
Oologah Lake - 21 year old man swimming from the beach drowned in 8 feet of water 40 feet from shore. No life jacket was worn.
In a pool, wading and swimming activities are in a controlled environment. However, at a lake, serious thought must be given to the risks. The lake is not a swimming pool with a uniform bottom to stand on and sides within reach when swimmers get tired. Many of us could jump into a pool and pull someone to safety. Very few of us can swim yards off shore to retrieve someone who has gone under. (Assuming we can find their body in the dark, murky water of the lake.) Lakes come with a risk of injury or death and people should know that and demand that life jackets be worn.
