Eagles Soar/Swim at Tenkiller & Sequoyah NWR

towards the water. As they got close to the water they unlocked talons and one of the eagles was thrown into the water. The other eagle then dove at him a couple of times. The eagle in the water tried to fly off but only made it a few yards before he lit back on the water (he never got his feet and legs out of the water). I don't know if he was too water- logged to take flight or what. The other eagle was still swooping down on him with his talons open. The eagle then started swimming to shore with what appeared to be an eagle version of the breast stroke. He would pull his bent wings forward and push them down into the water and then move them back along the body at the same time raising his body up out of the water and forward. While he was trying to swim to shore the other eagle would dive on him. Each time he flew close the eagle in the water would flip over on his back with his wings spread out and back to steady himself and raise his feet out of the water to protect himself from the other eagle. He would then turn over and swim toward shore again. This process was repeated over and over again for several minutes before the eagle finally reached shore and pulled himself up on a rock and stood there looking very waterlogged. The other eagle then proceeded to fly into a tree directly above the eagle and stare down at him. We watched for a while longer before looking at loons and when we looked back both eagles were gone.

STIR Reaches Agreement on Ark Sewage Permit

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Arkansas. Under the pact signed today, Save the Illinois River, Inc. (STIR) will dismiss its appeal of a discharge permit for the Northwest Arkansas Conservation Authority (NACA) wastewater plant serving Bentonville and Tontitown, Arkansas. In return, NACA has committed to operating the facility in a manner that is significantly more protective of the Illinois River watershed.
The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality approved an EPA-mandated permit allowing NACA to discharge phosphorus at a level of one-mg/L until mid- 2012. At that time, a more stringent limit of point-one mg/L might have been required. STIR opposed the permit because it feared the Illinois River and Tenkiller Lake would be further impaired by phosphorus, a nutrient that degrades water quality and promotes the growth of algae. STIR wanted the permit held until an EPA Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) study of Illinois River pollutants is completed. That study is about to begin with cooperation from both states.
STIR and NACA agree that it is important to protect the water quality in the Illinois River watershed and recognize that a number of important decisions will be made in the next few years that involve water quality, economic development, and quality of life in the Illinois River watershed, Sampier and Robinson said in their joint statement. STIR and NACA hope that this will serve as a positive example and a productive initial step for resolving issues in the future regarding the Illinois River watershed.
Save the Illinois River is a Tahlequah-based citizens coalition begun in 1984 with the mission to protect and preserve the Illinois River, its tributaries, and Tenkiller Lake.
Join STIR or renew your membership and you are eligible to win the beautiful, Otter Kayak in time for summer fun. Deadline for drawing is June 15, 2010*
Thinking of Selling? Selling a home in the dead of winter might seem ill-advised, particularly considering the state of the economy, but some experts think that making the decision to wait until spring to list the property could be a mistake.
Government incentives will likely have a big impact in 2010, with many buyers determined to sign a contract before the April 30 tax credit deadline.
This year, we're anticipating sales will peak earlier. The best time to get your house on the market will be February or early March, and maybe even earlier if you want to avoid competition.
