Field & Stream Ranks Tahlequah #16 Nationally

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sitting in with the ranks of Glenwood Spring, Colo; Traverse City, Mich; Mountain Home, Ark; Tahlequah ranked 16th in the nation for best fishing destinations, featuring Lake Tenkiller, according to the World's Leading Outdoor Magazine, Field & Stream. Below is thier article written in the January 2008 issue.
Eastern Oklahoma is one of the most diverse fishing regions in America. Around the town of Tahlequah, you'll find what you'd expect: prime largemouth bass fishing lakes (like Tenkiller to the south, and Gibson to the northwest), as well as some pleasant surprises, like trout fishing, and exceptional smallmouth bass fishing in the Illinois River. Add catfish, white bass, striped bass, crappie, and carp into the mix, and you get the picture.
Lake Tenkiller is a gem. Its waters are remarkably clear, and its 130-mile shoreline is picturesque.
Tahlequah is a friendly place, capital of the Cherokee Nation, home to Northeastern State University and a
Northeastern State University and a strong outdoors-connected community. The town bills itself as being in the heart of Oklahoma's "Green Country" and it's hard to argue against the natural beauty and relatively mild climate.
Whether you're thinking about sinking new roots, or just passing through, it's worth checking out
Soda Steve's Expands
During the off season around the lake, businesses sometimes take the opportunity to make some changes. One of the changes you will notice is at the popular Fin N Feather Resort. While the menu at Soda Steve's will basically stay the same-yes, the chili cheese fries will still be available-the location is changing. The old theater building just south of the pond and adjacent to the pool is being renovated and will house Soda Steve's!
My personal favorites are the hickory burger and the strawberry shake, and of course I can't forget the onion rings, the chocolate shake, Steve's own soda recipes, the chicken sandwich and the.... You get the picture!
Be sure to stop by during your lake visit and eat at Soda Steve's. Yum!!!
Lake Tenkiller Vintage Post Cards
Written by George Harris
Over the years I have had a lot of fun collecting vintage Lake Tenkiller post cards. I have purchased these from Ebay at different times, and they have come from all over the world. I finally took the time to scan all of them and post them to the internet. There are some from all eras of the lake, as early as the 50's, and guessing, I would say the black and white postcards are dated before the dam was built.
Four years ago I posted on this newsletter of one from the early 60's featuring "Bathing Beach". After showing it to everyone, no one could quite agree on where it was. Mr LeRoy Long from Okla City was kind enough back then to e-mail us and shared his thoughts here. Bathing Beach is the first one on the upper left hand corner.
"The bathing beach is the state park looking from inside Pine Cove on the southern side out into the lake to the NW. The stone jetty you can see used to be just below a tiny grocery store that serviced the ramp area. The boat dock had slips for rent but (in the good old days) was also used for people needing a place to put their boat for a few minutes while pulling the trailer out or going to the store or... No way would anyone let something convenient happen without charging for it now. It's interesting how the lake has smoothed off the terraced beaches in the area today." Thanks Mr. Long for the interesting Tenkiller retrospective.
If any one recognizes a card, or has a memory that they would like to share, please do so and I will share it on the newsletter. In the meantime, enjoy having a look back. The post cards featuring the cliff diving is no longer allowed on those areas of the lake.
