What a difference a year makes! From drought conditions with a low lake, to... ice, snow, and a 5 foot above normal lake. I hate to use the word "spared", because there were areas of the lake that were effected, but we had no where near the ice damage that took place in the Muskogee and Checotah areas. Living through the storm of 2000, thank goodness, this years storm did not seem to be quite as bad on Lake Tenkiller. |

Huge mature trees split down the middle or simply uprooted, are very common sites. Greenleaf State Park is in the process of cleaning up all the damage sustained within the park but will bear the marks for years to come. Parks from all around the area are sending crews to help cut tree limbs and pick up the downed limbs that are all over the park. Hope all have survived this last bit of snow and ice received on January 31st. If you would like to lend a Volunteers helping hand then you can contact Greenleaf State Park: 918-487-5622. excerpt written by Leann Bunn, Naturalist Tenkiller State Park Here is a revision of the Rogers & Hammerstein classic 'Oklahoma', being circulated on the internet, taking a lighthearted look at the state's troubles with Mother Nature this winter. The Tenkiller State Park and Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge would like to invite you to participate in our yearly Eagle Tours. Our first weekend was hit hard by the icy weather but our other dates coming up are February 3,10,17,24 and March 3. We will meet at the Sequoyah National Wildlife Headquarters located just south of Vian at 9:00 a.m. We will then caravan around the refuge looking for our National Symbol. There are two nests that were active before the ice storm, we are hoping that they survived intact and the eggs are still viable. The refuge provides a small bus that will carry approximately 15 people and will be a first come first serve basis. If you have never been on one of our tours, please come prepared with warm clothes and raingear. |
|
You should also bring water and snacks. If you have binoculars they are a must, a spotting scope is encouraged, ( if you have one) and a birders field guide will also be helpful. After the Eagle Tour in the morning, anyone that wishes to can meet at 2:00 p.m. within Tenkiller State Park at Fisherman's Point to view "Loons." We gather at the point and look around for a bit then we travel to a few other places where we might get a glimpse of one of the more rare species of loons. In the winter Lake Tenkiller hosts four of the five species of loons found in North America. Come out and join us and don't forget to bring something warm to drink. The wind off the lake can be very cold. Please call ahead to make sure that the days events haven't been cancelled due to road conditions. written by Leann Bunn, Naturalist Tenkiller State Park Photo by Jim Arterburn, Blackgum Landing, Lake Tenkiller on Dec-04.

February is the traditional month of love, valentines, cupid, and all of those things. Obviously, we love the lake, and hope you do too. So, last year we went and resurrected the "I Love Lake Tenkiller" sticker. (pictured above) Back about 15 years ago there was a sticker out that was a basic blue print on white sticker that seemed to be everywhere, and according to Kim Hutson, as as they began to run out, the demand seemed to increase. So we continue to take it a step further, and with technology of today, we were able to put the graphic of Tenkiller lake water in the background. We think it wound up beautiful, just like the lake. We are glad to order a reprint and thrilled at the demand. If you would like a sticker, stop by the office, and pick up a few, and help us spread that love around. Or for those of you that do not live here and would like some mailed, let us know how many and send us a self addressed stamped envelope to the office and we will get them out.
