Dear George,

Lots of things are happening in the Lake Tenkiller area, and we would like to share a little of it with you. Thanks so much for being one of the 1800+ subscribers! We Love Lake Tenkiller! Celebrating 16 years of Service to the area.

Christmas for Kids Campaign Kicks Of

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Every year, the Greater Tenkiller Area Association (GTAA ) and Tenkiller Area Community Organization (TACO) sponsor a Christmas for Kids campaign. We take donations from people who want to provide toys and clothing for underprivileged children for Christmas. We work with a grade school in the Tenkiller area to get the names and ages of children who are needy and find out exactly what they need. Then, with this information, volunteers go to Wal-Mart to buy toys and clothing for these children.
Last year TACO and GTAA together raised over $2000 for this campaign and with your help hope to do even better this year. TACO will purchase and deliver the items to the parents of the children.
Many of you last year donated $100 each and we put that money to good use. Any amount will help, however. There were more than 100 children in 35 different families who were needy last year, and we expect about that many this year, too.
Please send your checks to:
PO Box 245
God bless you and thanks in advance!
Duckpin Bowling is Back at the Wolf
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The re-grand opening of "The Duck Club" will be in the next few weeks. Booking for league play for January and February has begun.

The Duck Club name comes from the four lanes of duckpin bowling now in operation. Duckpins use a 63-foot lane, identical to standard ten pins bowling. Kyle Fulbright, the PGA professional who manages the Wolf at Tenkiller Golf Club and the Duck Club points out that "the scoring in duckpins is identical to scoring in ten pins, so the game will be familiar to anyone who ever bowled". "However", says Fulbright, "duckpins are shorter than ten pins and the squat look of a duck has given the game its name. More importantly", says Fulbright, "the duckpin ball is much smaller (weighing just 3-pounds, 12-ounces with a 5-inch diameter) than the 12 to 16-pound balls used in ten pins (a 10-inch diameter)." Fulbright says "the smaller ball makes the game particularly popular among seniors and young people". For the youngest bowlers, computer-operated bumpers eliminate the gutter ball and give parents and grandparents the chance to really play against their young ones.

Pictured is a standard 10 pin on the left, and Duckpins on the far right

Kyle Fulbright goes on to advise "the smaller ball and pin make duckpin bowling a very challenging game". Says Fulbright, "though perfect 300 games are common in ten pin bowling, nobody has ever scored a perfect 300 in the more than 100 years of duckpin bowling". To ease locals and lake visitors into the sport, the Duck Club has initially installed an easier form of the game, and expects to shift to the harder duckpin game for the next winter season.

George Harris, a local resident and Broker/Owner at TenkillerProperty.com, is excited about the re-opening of the Duck Club. Harris says "the Duck Club is the most important new investment in the Lake Tenkiller community since the construction of the dam." Harris points out that "the Duck Club will offer area residents and lake visitors great new dining and recreational opportunities in a wonderful atmosphere. Harris says that "the Duck Club will be an important addition to the local community as a family recreation center and as a place where churches, schools, sports teams and other groups can host fundraisers and youth groups". Bowling leagues are now forming at the Duck Club. League play consists of 4 teams of 4 people each team. League play is 9 weeks starting the first week in January going into the first week of March. Harris says "Being involved in Duckpin league play is something I really look forward each week. It makes for a great evening of entertainment" Open bowling is available through December, and off nights of league play.

The Wolf at Tenkiller Golf Club is conveniently located off highway 82, which provides access to the eastern shore resort communities along Lake Tenkiller, and highway 100, which provides access to the southern and western shores of the lake. The club is located nine miles north of Interstate Highway 40 at Vian (exit 297) and then 1.5 miles east of the intersection of highways 82 and 100.

Lower Illinois River in Danger

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation has resumed trout stockings at the Lower Illinois River due to water levels improving in Tenkiller Lake, and officials with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation say they continue to seek a lasting solution to water shortage issues at the river.
All of the water stored in Lake Tenkiller is allocated for hydropower or municipal and industrial water supply. The trout fishery on the Lower Illinois River, which is below Lake Tenkiller, is not entitled to any of it
Scott Hood, president of the Oklahoma Trout Unlimited in Tulsa,
Okla., has been fighting to see water released on a regular basis. A river ceases to be a river when it's not flowing. Hood would like to see a constant flow of 100 to 175 cfs to sustain the fishery. Though water levels at the river are up now, Fisheries Chief Barry Bolton with the State Wildlife Dept. said the fishery will likely face similar shortages again if water is not reallocated to support the fishery. Until then, Bolton said possible short-term resolutions include more frequent releases of oxygenated water through hydropower generation, and taking steps to ensure water
Hood likened the generation periods to "flushing the toilet" every few days. Southwest Power Adminstration said it will try to run two turbines at half-power to help the fishery, but to Hood's knowledge it hasn't happened.
"It's a problem that can be solved by putting pressure on the government," Hood said. "The only way we can fix this problem is by writing to our congressmen. Dan Boren's email box should be full right now."
A federal issue, concerned sportsmen and women can contact Boren at (202) 255-2701. Boren's website is http://boren.house.gov. Oklahoma Sen. Jim Inhofe, the ranking member on the Environmental Committee, can be reached at (202) 224-4721. His website is http://inhofe.senate.gov.
Without constant flows, Oklahoma's first year-round trout fishery and Gore's claim to the "Trout Capitol of Oklahoma" will soon be history.
