Every year, the Greater Tenkiller Area Association (GTAA ) and Tenkiller Area Community Organization (TACO) sponsor a Christmas for Kids campaign. "We take donations from people who want to provide toys and clothing for underprivileged children at Christmas time," according to Don Nowlin, Executive Director of the GTAA. "We work with a grade school in the Tenkiller area to get the names and ages of children who are needy and find out exactly what they need. Then, with this information, volunteers go to Wal-Mart to buy toys and clothing for these children," said Nowlin. Last year TACO and GTAA together |
|
raised over $2000 for this campaign and with your help hope to do even better this year. TACO will purchase and deliver the items to the parents of the children. The parents are then able to provide Christmas for their children. Many of you last year donated $100 each and we put that money to good use. Any amount will help, however. There were more than 100 children in 35 different families who were needy last year, and we expect about that many this year, too. Please send your checks to: GTAA Christmas for Kids Pictured is GTAA Exec. Tenkiller State Park will host their annual Star Party to begin at 8 p.m. on Fri Dec 5 and Sat. Dec. 6. According to Glen Kilgour, the observing coordinator for the Oklahoma City Astronomy Club, there will also be an afternoon presentation on Saturday at the Nature Center at 1 p.m. on how anyone can get started in the hobby and learn his or her way around the seasonal skies. Kilgour will cover basic orbital mechanics to explain why the sky moves, which will be followed by a question period. No hobby can inspire people and fire up their imagination quite like astronomy. We seek to bring the wonders of the universe to everyone 'first hand'. We host informative, fascinating and just plain fun outings for the general public, schools, scout troops, and YOU! |

Labor Day has come and gone and the lake traffic is back to fall and winter normal. There are some real diehard bass fishermen out there still. They were hitting it hard on Saturday morning, Nov. 22 when the air temperature was in the 30's. I guess I am getting too old. That just didn't look like fun. The summer thermocline should be ready to break up now that the surface temperature is dropping. Once that happens the lake will begin "turning over", a process that continues all winter long. Colder surface water will sink toward the bottom, carrying oxygen to the deepest parts of the lake. This allows the fish to move down to the depths and probably contributes to the slower fishing as the fish are no longer concentrated in the upper 25 feet or so. Water clarity is very good and the water quality parameters are normal for this time of year. John Ellis |
