By George Harris Since our last newsletter area Lakers have been bombarded with a new warning that really none of us have been accustomed to. Blue Green Algae (BGA) has been around, I suppose, since water has been around. Grand Lake authorities opened our eyes to something we really have not seen, BGA at levels where vast acres of water were contaminated and unsafe to swim in. In the last 30 days, a heightened awareness of BGA has come about with the Corp of Engineers testing waters where people have questioned contamination. The Corp has issued a number of press releases concerning Tenkiller and other area lakes. The Corp has been very informative in their releases, but the most interesting thing about it all, is how the public interprets it when distributed into media outlets. How a very mild risk at Tenkiller, can be embellished into closing the entire lake, I guess it is part of human nature, and the linking of severity to what Grand Lake had, but it ultimately hurts business. Yes, Lake Tenkiller is open. |

It is fascinating how social media effects our lives and how we are becoming spoiled by up to the second information. But it also reveals the responses of people, and how they digest all this information. I do not know how many times someone has asked, "Is the lake still closed?" "Is it safe for me to swim now?" Here is what the Corp released concerning Tenkiller "In areas with low risk levels, visitors are urged to exercise caution in these areas. Since it is impossible to test all areas of the lake, the Corps advises visitors to use caution when swimming or boating. If you see a foam or discoloration in the water, avoid contact with that area and report it to the local project office." That's it. Pretty basic. Just don't jump in scummy water. Use common sense. No, the lake is not closed. In studying all of this, I noticed many states have informed the public for years about BGA, and it has become part of their lives, they are acclimated to checking the 'risk level' of their water. I have asked the Corp if they have a record from previous years they can compare to, here is part of their response "This really is an unusual year, mainly because of the heat and dry conditions. We have never seen BGA present in four (Okla. Corp) lakes simultaneously". As my question was not directly answered, I suspect this is the first year they have been this involved. Yes, Lake Tenkiller is open. The Wake-Up Call to Action is to support organizations to stop the drain off of unwanted nutrients such as chicken litter and other forms of farm animal waste that increase the growth of Algae. Save the Illinois River, Inc., STIR, is the only private, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization chartered exclusively for the preservation of the Illinois River, Flint Creek, Barren Fork Creek, and Tenkiller Lake. The National Recreation Trail Program recognizes trails that provide opportunities for all Americans to enjoy the out-of-doors and improve the quality of life of our communities. Deputy Secretary of the Interior David J. Hayes and U.S. Senator Dick Durbin today announced the designation of 41 trails as National Recreation Trails, including Sandtown Nature Trail, adding almost 650 miles of trails to the National Trails System. Spanning across 17 states, the land and water trails provide opportunities for communities to connect with |

nature and enjoy the great outdoors as part of a healthier lifestyle, the core principles behind President Obama's America's Great Outdoors and First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move Outside! "From coast to coast, National Recreation Trails help connect Americans with the wonders of America's Great Outdoors," said Deputy Secretary Hayes. "Today's new National Recreation Trails, built through partnerships with local communities and stakeholders, provide great opportunities for people to get outside, get active and have fun. The trails establish a strong link in our urban and rural communities alike to a conservation legacy for future generations to build upon." Sandtown Nature Trail, located 3 miles south of Vian, Oklahoma, is part of 20,800 acres that comprise the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is nestled in the gently rolling foothills of the Ozark Mountains and serves as a major stopover for waterfowl during their spring and fall migrations. It is an overlay project with the US Army Corps of Engineers and was established as part of mitigation for lands that were lost through the creation of the Robert S. Kerr Reservoir in 1970. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers park rangers will tell you they have the best job in the world. They get to be outdoors when they are on patrol and they interact with the public they are responsible for keeping safe at Corps lakes. There is, however, one part of the job the rangers dread. It is when they have to respond to a public fatality. As first responders they have to retrieve or search for the victim's remains, and they often witness the traumatic impact the death has on the victim's family and friends. The grief and sadness are amplified when the death could have been prevented and in most cases by simply wearing a life vest. Public safety is the number one priority of the Corps and that includes water safety. Rangers spend hours and hours interacting with the public when they are out on patrol or at various community events, urging people to wear a life jacket and practice water and boating safety. Unfortunately, people still drown at Corps lakes. Tulsa District Deputy Commander Lt. Col. Gene Snyman believes the issue is so |
|
important that he is spending some weekends this summer going out on water patrol (in his Army uniform) to support the rangers and to try to spread the water safety message. On a water patrol at Tenkiller Lake, the ranger pointed out to Snyman the exact location where a 21-year-old woman drowned after walking out too far at the swim beach. "It is quite sobering to see all the happy kids and families at the location and imagining the frantic scenes of just a few days prior," said Snyman. "This year our community has lost a 12-year-old, a 13-year-old, a 14-year-old, and a 21-year-old, among many others. I have an 11-year-old, a 13-year-old and a 21-year-old daughter of my own, so it strikes pretty close to home." Click here to read more
