Illinois River Balloon Fest Aug 14-16

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Illinois River BalloonFest Committee (IRBC) and the Community of Tahlequah is proud to announce that plans are underway for the Sixteenth Annual Illinois River BalloonFest. Tahlequah will once again be hosting this beautiful event of 30 hot air balloons from across the country. This year's event is scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, August 14, 15, and 16, 2008. This is the longest running hot air balloon event in the state of Oklahoma and will take place at Tahlequah's Municipal Airport, located west of the city on SH 51, and will feature balloon glows each night (weather permitting).
Focusing on family entertainment, this year's festival will offer a wide variety of family fun, including a carnival, children's activities, live music entertainment, tractor pull, 4th Annual Illinois River BalloonChase Challenge, lots of food and activities for all. "Once again this event could not have been made possible without the continued support of our event and balloon sponsors," said Craig Clifford, IRBC President. "We appreciate the local businesses every year supporting this spectacular event for our community."
Admission at the gate is free and there is $5 parking/day fee. The Illinois River BalloonFest Committee would like to remind spectators of a few very important tips. Spectators need to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets for seating. The public should plan to allow ample time to arrive at the site, park, and be in a position to enjoy the balloons, the live entertainment, and special family activities. There will be additional costs for the carnival rides, for some activities on site, and of course, food and drink concessions will offer a wide variety of items for sale.
Cratin's Corner is now Parkside Convenience Store
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

By John Lang

The former Cratin's Corner Convenience store on Highway 100 across from Tenkiller State Park was purchased last September by Shane & Kim Buttery. I recently had the pleasure of sitting down for a chat with Kim and getting the low-down on their operation.

All of us locals have watched as they extensively did a complete makeover; inside you'll find a brand-new walk-in "beer cave", and a separate bait shop that has the widest selection of tackle around here! They extended the building and added another section that now houses their great little Bar-B-Que restaurant-- aptly named "Up 'N Smoke". I can personally attest that the beef brisket is fabulous--you can also select from barbequed ribs, chicken, hot links, and pulled pork.

Out back on the patio Kim says they'll have live music on holidays, and future plans for the back lot include six cabins and a small laundromat (sorely needed around here). Parkside Convenience Store also sells hunting and fishing licenses, and Kim told me this fall they'll also be a hunter check station. An ATM machine is on the premises if you need some cash.

It's obvious by their major investment the Buttery's are here to stay. As Kim says: "We're definitely in for the long haul now!" So drop in, order up some bar-b-que, get some new tackle and anything else you need for a day on the lake. Shane and Kim have done a great job on their property, so be sure and patronize them! Hours for Up 'N Smoke are 11:00 to 10:00 Thursday and Sunday, 11:00 to 11:00 Friday and Saturday, or you can call your order in at (918) 489-2076.

56th Cherokee National Holiday Aug 29-31

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Every Labor Day weekend, the Cherokee Nation commemorates the signing of the Cherokee Nation Constitution of 1839. The annual event, called Cherokee National Holiday, is a celebration of
Cherokee Heritage, cultural awareness, and reuniting of families. Thousands of Cherokees and visitors from across the United States and abroad make the pilgrimage to the historic Cherokee Nation capital in Tahlequah, Oklahoma to renew friendships and celebrate the Cherokee spirit.
The three-day celebration is jam-packed with activities for all ages from traditional games like Cornstalk Shoot and Blowgun competition to the more familiar Golf and Softball Tournaments. Hundreds of vendors and crafts people set up booths where visitors may view and purchase authentic Native American products and foods. From blankets and to pottery, you will find the Native American artistry and craftsmanship unique.
The Inter-Tribal powwow on the Cherokee Nation Cultural Grounds highlights the celebration nightly as dancers from all over the United States compete for prizes and honors.
As you continue your visit to the Cherokee National Holiday, you are invited to browse the Cherokee Heritage Center, offering visitors a glimpse into the Cherokee history and culture.
The Cherokee National Holiday is a festive time in Tahlequah, whether it's Children's games, The Fiddler Contest, Story Telling or Cherokee Gospel Singing. The Cherokee National Holiday will be an event you and your family will want to experience every Labor Day weekend.
TenkillerProperty.com LLC, a leading real estate brokerage firm on Lake Tenkiller, located in Eastern Oklahoma, was recognized number 91 in Entrepreneur magazine's annual "HOT 100" listing of America's top fast-growth businesses and the entrepreneurs who built them. In its May 2008 issue, Entrepreneur compiled this list with the help of research provider CentrisPoint and its database of 21 million U.S. businesses. Of the nearly 21 million companies on the preliminary list, only 0.3% made the first cut, and just a fraction of those made it to the Hot 100, including TenkillerProperty.com
